On Thursday, January 22 – San Diego FC announced the extension of defender Luca Bombino through the 2028-29 season with a club option for 2029-30 season.
Bombino was signed to a permanent deal after a successful first year in his loan spell from LAFC. He started 30 matches, scored two goal and notched two assists in all competitions as a wing-back for the Chrome and Azul.
Apart from the goal contributions, Bombino has been a steady defender playing well above his age. A rookie in the MLS, he showed incredible work ethic, unrelenting aggressiveness in his challenges on the ball and won over the left side of the 100 section at Snapdragon Stadium – quickly becoming a fan-favorite.

The success in San Diego earned Bombino a call up to represent the U.S. U-20 Men’s National Team. In 2025, he earned five caps and represented the USA at the FIFA U-20 World Cup Chile 2025, where he made two appearances.
Surely, Bombino owes a lot of his success to head coach Mikey Varas. Coming to San Diego FC allowed him to be in an environment where young players have real opportunities for playing time as long as they earn it. Varas believed in Bombino and gave him a chance to grow by throwing him into the fire. Bombino rose to the challenge, cementing himself as a regular in the starting XI.
