Former Pepperdine University Waves midfielder Tatum Wynalda is officially a Wave once again.

San Diego Wave FC announced Tuesday that the Southern California native has signed a short-term injury replacement contract through April 2026, marking the first professional contract of her career.

Turning Heads in Preseason

We first got a glimpse of Wynalda in January, when she joined San Diego’s preseason roster as a non-rostered invitee for the Coachella Valley Invitational. From the moment she stepped onto the pitch, she looked comfortable.

In the opening match against the Kansas City Current, Wynalda entered in the 60th minute and immediately stretched the field along the left wing.

She provided a steady outlet for the midfield, delivered dangerous crosses into the penalty area, and nearly produced a highlight moment with a beautifully placed corner kick that dropped into the heart of the box.

What stood out most was her work rate. She pressed relentlessly, tracking runners deep into the defensive line and showing a clear understanding of the Wave’s defensive structure.

When she drifted centrally, her creativity began to shine. Wynalda picked out forward passes that unlocked space for attackers and helped maintain the tempo in the midfield. For a player who had only just joined the group, the performance was remarkably composed and confident.

In the second Coachella Valley Invitational match against expansion side Denver Summit, she entered in the 74th minute and brought that same energy. Whether stationed on the left wing, arriving late into the box, or battling through midfield challenges, Wynalda’s movement and willingness to compete were evident.

For fans watching closely, she felt like a natural fit.

Now, that preseason impression has turned into an opportunity.

What is an Injury Replacement Contract?

Wynalda joins the roster on an injury replacement contract, a mechanism that allows a club to temporarily sign a player when one of its rostered players is placed on either the 45-Day or Season-Ending Injury list. These contracts run for the estimated period the injured player is unavailable and count against the team’s salary cap during that time. If the club wishes to retain the player beyond the relief period, a new standard player agreement would be required.

The club has not specified which player Wynalda is replacing, though it is likely tied to the absences of either Mimi Van Zanten or Trinity Armstrong.

Wynalda’s Path to the Pros

For Wynalda, the signing is a well-earned step forward. The Thousand Oaks native capped off a decorated career at Pepperdine, where she scored 23 goals and added 17 assists across 79 appearances for the Waves.

She recorded a career-best 10 assists in her senior season and helped lead the program to back-to-back WCC Championships in 2024 and 2025. A three-time All-WCC Second Team selection before earning First Team honors in 2025, Wynalda consistently proved herself as both a creator and a finisher.

With the NWSL season set to kick off March 13, her story feels especially fitting. A former Wave becoming a Wave, stepping from a strong preseason showing into her first professional contract, and doing it all in her home region.

For now, the opportunity runs through April. But if her Coachella performances were any indication, Wynalda has already made the most of her first impression.
