Kailen Sheridan’s tenure with San Diego Wave FC has come to an end.
The Wave announced Monday that the club and the longtime goalkeeper have mutually agreed to terminate her contract, which was set to run through the 2026 season. Sheridan departs as one of the most influential players in club history and a cornerstone of the Wave since their inaugural campaign.
Sheridan joined San Diego ahead of the 2022 season and immediately established herself as one of the league’s top goalkeepers. She started every match she appeared in across four seasons, totaling 87 appearances, and was named NWSL Goalkeeper of the Year in the club’s debut year. That season helped set the foundation for the Wave’s rapid rise, including a playoff berth as an expansion side.
Her impact extended well beyond shot stopping. Sheridan emerged as a central leader within the locker room, eventually taking on captaincy duties following Alex Morgan’s midseason retirement in 2024. In 2025, she reached 600 career NWSL regular-season saves, becoming just the second goalkeeper in league history to hit the milestone.
With Sheridan’s departure, San Diego now enters the offseason without a goalkeeper under contract for 2026, marking a significant roster decision as the club continues to reshape its identity. The move closes a foundational chapter for the Wave while signaling further changes ahead during a pivotal rebuilding period.
