San Diego Wave FC continue to build toward the 2026 season with the signing of midfielder Lia Godfrey.

The Wave announced Tuesday that Godfrey has joined the club on a two-year contract through 2027, with options to extend the agreement through 2029. The 24-year-old arrives from the University of Virginia following a collegiate career defined by consistency, creativity, and attacking production from midfield.

Godfrey spent five seasons with the Cavaliers, where she operated as a central attacking figure capable of influencing games both as a creator and a finisher. Her final season saw her help guide Virginia to a top seed in the NCAA Tournament, reinforcing her role as a steady presence in high-leverage moments.

At the international level, Godfrey brings valuable experience despite entering her first professional season. She has represented the United States across multiple youth national team age groups and gained early exposure to elite competition, including a historic appearance at the U-17 World Cup as a teenager.

How Godfrey Fits with the Wave

Godfrey’s versatility makes her a natural fit within San Diego’s evolving midfield. She is comfortable operating as a No. 10, in a central midfield role, or drifting wide, giving the Wave flexibility in both their build-up and attacking structure.

Her ability to find pockets of space, connect play between lines, and arrive late into goal-scoring areas complements the club’s established creators while adding another layer of attacking balance.

As the Wave continue to reshape their roster this offseason, Godfrey profiles as a player who can contribute immediately in rotation while also offering long-term upside within the club’s midfield core.
