In San Diego FC's brief, two-year history, they've already had their fair share of high-profile matches. Last year's playoff run, the win at LAFC, and of course - the inaugural match win against the then-defending champions, LA Galaxy.
Oh, and who can forget the second match against the Galaxy on that hot, 1:45pm kickoff Saturday? When Snapdragon Stadium went into a complete frenzy after a last-second, '95th minute header goal scored by none other than Hirving 'Chucky' Lozano to win it 2-1 in favor of the home side. A result that, unfortunately for everyone, sent fan groups from both sides into an all-out brawl in the seats and on the concourse of Snapdragon.
2025 was a memorable year for SDFC in relation to playing against the Galaxy. Since then, both teams' rosters look much different, and both teams are trying to find their way above the playoff line in the Western Conference standings.
SDFC currently sits in 11th place with 27 points, just one point below the playoff line. The LA Galaxy are right behind them in 12th with 26 points, although they have played one more match than San Diego. Therefore, three points from this weekend's match is crucial for both teams to stay in contention.
Chucky's Revenge
One of the biggest storylines in MLS this weekend will be the arrival of Chucky Lozano in a place that he was banished from, this time – wearing a different jersey.
San Diego FC were not shy about disclosing the details behind their efforts to move the Mexican international to a different club. In fact, sporting director, Tyler Heaps, said that there were multiple clubs from all over the world calling to inquire about Lozano's services.
At the end of the day, the no-longer-wanted San Diego DP was not sold, largely due to his handsome salary. The fact of the matter is that not many clubs (if any at all) were willing to take on the rest of Chucky's salary on his contract and in turn, he wasn't willing to take less money.
Why would he? After all – he gave up a chance to play in the World Cup in exchange for collecting his paycheck and taking care of his growing family.
Now out of options to sell him, San Diego FC considered a loan. LA Galaxy came calling. With the injury of star player, Riqui Puig, the Galaxy are desperate to find someone to fill the void while Puig recovers.
Loaning Lozano was the next smartest thing to do. It gets Lozano out of San Diego and gives a little salary relief (SDFC are still paying the majority of his salary). For Lozano, it gives him a chance to play again and to prove to everyone that SDFC made a mistake in letting him go.
On Saturday, he'll have a chance to do that in San Diego's house, a perfect stage for an emotional performance with a little revenge sprinkled on top.
Current State of the Team - SDFC
After seeing their three-game unbeaten streak snapped by Portland, SDFC responded in emphatic fashion with a 3-0 win over Colorado.
The performance against Colorado looked much closer to the version of SDFC that fans expected to see this season. San Diego pressed with intensity, defended as a group and created enough chances to put the game away.
Mikey Varas knows, however, that there is still plenty of work to do.
"We have to keep pushing. This is something that we enjoy, but you can never take the points for granted at first-team level, but we've got to keep pushing because we have a mission to get on with."
That mission is simple: climb the table.
With the playoff race extremely tight, SDFC can't afford to let a strong performance against Colorado become another isolated result. Saturday's match also gives San Diego a chance to build on its recent success at Snapdragon Stadium, where it has won four straight matches which ties the record for the longest home win streak in the club's short history.
Player to Watch: Gabriel Pirani
Gabriel Pirani hasn't been with San Diego FC for long, but the Brazilian midfielder has already shown flashes of the creativity he can bring to the midfield.
Pirani joined SDFC on loan and has quickly become an interesting piece in the attack. He has the ability to play between the lines, combine with teammates and add a bit of unpredictability to San Diego's possession-heavy style.
While he may not be the answer to every problem in SDFC's attack, Pirani gives Varas another creative option in open play. His ability to make something happen in tight spaces could be especially valuable against an LA Galaxy team that has struggled for consistency defensively.
After scoring his first goal for SDFC against Portland, and second against Colorado, Pirani will look to build on that performance in front of the home crowd Saturday.
LA Galaxy
The Galaxy have managed just one win in their last eight matches, putting increasing pressure on head coach Greg Vanney.
That lone victory came against the San Jose Earthquakes, but the Galaxy were unable to build on it. Their most recent match ended in a frustrating 2-2 draw against CF Montréal, with Los Angeles surrendering a late lead.
The results have made consistency a major issue for the Galaxy. They have shown flashes of quality but haven't been able to string together enough positive performances to climb the Western Conference table.
That makes Saturday particularly important. With both teams hovering around the playoff line, this isn't just another regular-season matchup. It's a chance for one of these clubs to gain valuable ground on the teams above them while potentially pushing the other further down the table.
Player to Watch: Maya Yoshida
Veteran defender Maya Yoshida remains an important presence for the Galaxy. Yoshida scored against Montréal, giving him seven career MLS goals, although it was the first of those goals that did not come from a header.
Interestingly, all four of his goals over the past two seasons have come on the road.
With the Galaxy struggling defensively and SDFC entering the match with confidence after scoring three against Colorado, Yoshida and the rest of Los Angeles' back line will have their hands full at Snapdragon Stadium.
For SDFC, this is an opportunity to take advantage of a Galaxy team that is struggling for consistency—and potentially jump several teams in the playoff race with three points.
