San Diego FC returns to Snapdragon Stadium on Saturday night with its playoff hopes hanging in the balance.

With just four matches remaining in the 2026 MLS regular season, SDFC hosts the Seattle Sounders at 7:30 p.m. PT on Fan Appreciation Night. San Diego enters the weekend in 12th place in the Western Conference with an 8-12-10 record and 34 points, leaving little room for dropped points over the final stretch.

Saturday also begins a difficult final push for a San Diego team still searching for its first victory since late August.

SDFC has gone eight consecutive MLS matches without a win, but there have been signs of life lately. San Diego has earned draws in four of its last five matches, including back-to-back results against Houston Dynamo and the LA Galaxy.

The problem is that draws are becoming less valuable with the playoff line still out of reach.

Against Seattle, San Diego has another opportunity to turn one point into three — and potentially keep its postseason hopes alive for another week.

San Diego's Attack Continues to Produce

For all of SDFC's struggles during the second half of the season, scoring goals hasn't necessarily been the biggest problem.

San Diego has scored 53 goals through 30 matches, the fourth-most among Western Conference teams. But those goals have been offset by 56 conceded, one of the highest totals in the conference.

That trend was on display again against the Galaxy.

San Diego fell behind twice in the first half but responded both times. Anders Dreyer converted a penalty in the 10th minute before Gabriel Pirani scored in the 39th to make it 2-2. SDFC finished the match with nearly 65 percent possession and a 15-12 advantage in shots, but neither team found a winner after halftime.

Dreyer remains at the center of San Diego's attack.

After finishing as an MLS MVP finalist in 2025, the Danish winger has followed it up with another productive season, recording 13 goals and 13 assists in league play. Those 26 goal contributions lead SDFC and make him the most obvious player for Seattle to focus on Saturday night.

Pirani is also beginning to make an impact at an important time. His goal against the Galaxy was his second in as many matches after scoring the late equalizer in San Diego's 3-3 draw against Houston.

If that production continues alongside Dreyer and Marcus Ingvartsen, SDFC has enough attacking quality to cause problems for Seattle.

The bigger question is whether San Diego can keep Seattle from doing the same at the other end.

Seattle Arrives With Its Own Motivation

While San Diego is fighting to get above the playoff line, Seattle is trying to improve its position before the postseason begins.

The Sounders enter Saturday in seventh place in the West with an 11-10-9 record and 42 points. They had won three consecutive MLS matches before a 1-0 loss to FC Dallas and a 1-1 draw against CF Montréal in their last two.

Seattle is also getting healthier at the right time.

Jordan Morris, Yeimar, Cristian Roldan, Jesús Ferreira and Paul Arriola have all been working their way back after injury absences, giving head coach Brian Schmetzer more options as the Sounders prepare for the postseason.

One player to watch is Albert Rusnák, who continues to be one of Seattle's primary creators in midfield. The Sounders also have plenty of experience in players such as Morris and Roldan, while 19-year-old Sebastian Gomez has emerged as another attacking option. Gomez scored Seattle's equalizer against Montréal and has three goals and four assists across all competitions this season.

That combination of experience and young talent will present another challenge for a San Diego defense that has struggled to consistently keep opponents off the scoreboard.

First Meeting Ended Level in Seattle

There wasn't much separating these teams when they met earlier this season.

SDFC traveled to Lumen Field on May 9 and came away with a 1-1 draw. Marcus Ingvartsen put San Diego ahead early after getting behind the Seattle back line, and SDFC held that advantage deep into the second half.

Seattle eventually broke through in the 80th minute, when Danny Musovski finished following an Albert Rusnák corner to rescue a point for the Sounders.

San Diego is now 1-1-1 against Seattle since entering MLS.

Saturday's meeting, however, comes under much different circumstances.

The May matchup arrived with most of the season still ahead. This time, every point carries significantly more weight.

SDFC Keys to the Match

San Diego's identity under Mikey Varas hasn't changed. SDFC still wants the ball, wants to build through pressure and wants to control matches through possession.

But at this stage of the season, controlling a match isn't enough.

SDFC needs wins.

San Diego has scored 11 goals over its last five matches but has conceded 14 during that same stretch. Four of those five matches ended in draws, including 3-3 against Austin, 2-2 against Inter Miami, 3-3 against Houston and 2-2 against the Galaxy.

That tells much of the story of SDFC's recent form.

The attack has been capable of creating enough to win games. The problem has been finding the balance between pushing numbers forward and remaining organized when possession is lost.

Seattle has enough quality to punish those mistakes, particularly if San Diego allows the Sounders opportunities to attack in transition.

For SDFC, Saturday may come down to whether it can produce a complete 90-minute performance rather than another entertaining draw.

One More Chance at Snapdragon

Saturday will be San Diego's second-to-last home match of the regular season and will also serve as Fan Appreciation Night at Snapdragon Stadium.

The club will give away 2026 SDFC team posters, while FanFest will feature Halloween-themed activities and a kids' costume contest. Select supporters will also have opportunities to participate in a postgame player meet-and-greet and Shirts Off Their Back experience.

But once the match begins, the focus will quickly shift back to the standings.

SDFC has spent much of the last two months leaving matches feeling like it deserved more. At this point in the season, there isn't much time left to turn those performances into results.

Seattle presents a difficult test, but San Diego has already shown it can compete with the Sounders. With Dreyer continuing to produce, Pirani finding form and the season reaching its final stretch, Saturday represents another opportunity to finally turn a draw into a win.

And with only four matches remaining, SDFC can't afford to let too many more of those opportunities slip away.
