2025 was a breakout year for Luca Bombino. An LAFC youth product who San Diego signed last year not just because they saw talent, but also because they saw his character. A hard worker, relentless on and off the ball young player who was desperate for a chance to showcase what he can bring to a squad if given the opportunity.
San Diego FC took a chance on Bombino, and it paid off exponentially. He started 29 MLS matches last season, earning his spot in the left back position.

Bombino began the match in his customary left back position and was a steady presence along the back line early on. As the game wore on, he was pushed higher up the pitch, demonstrating his versatility by shifting into an outside midfield role late in the contest. That move came after a substitution introduced young newcomer Kieran Sargent, who made his debut by stepping in at left back.
Bombino excelled on the wing, scoring a late, 86th minute goal when he pounced on a loose ball in front of the net after Pumas defenders scrambled to clear it. His efforts and contributions on both sides of the field made it difficult to award MOTM award to anyone else.
"We had a slow start but I'm very happy to get the goal and show these incredible fans the hard work that we've been doing in the offseason", Bombino said after the match.
Fans are able to see Bombino grow in front of their eyes. From a nervous kid who was thrown into the fire to a confident, decisive player who embraces each challenge and takes it head on.

While the defense play is what Bombino is mostly known for, his offensive contributions have improved greatly over the last season. Bombino is confidently getting into the offensive half and crossing the ball into the box, something Varas wants to see him do more of.
SDFC extended Bombino's contract in the offseason, doubling down on their initial investment. The extension is guaranteed through the 2028-29 season with Club Options for the 2029–30 season.
"From the day he arrived, Luca has shown a strong work ethic and a willingness to improve", said Sporting Director Tyler Heaps. "He has consistently demonstrated quality, professionalism, and an understanding of our identity as a club. We see Luca as an import part of our sporting project, and this extension reflects the trust we have in Luca, both as a player and as a person."
Bombino’s 2026 sophomore season will serve as an important measuring stick, as he looks to further his growth and build upon a highly successful 2025 campaign. For San Diego FC, Bombino’s trajectory represents exactly the kind of growth and return they envisioned when they first took a chance on him.
