FC Cincinnati Overview

FC Cincinnati enters Saturday as one of the more talented teams in Major League Soccer. Last season, Pat Noonan’s side finished second in both the Eastern Conference and the Supporters’ Shield standings with 65 points, winning 20 matches and advancing in the playoffs.

Yet despite the impressive record, Cincinnati rarely looked fully convincing. Many of their victories came by a single goal, and underlying analytics suggested the club significantly overperformed its expected numbers throughout the year. Injuries at center back and defensive midfield disrupted continuity, while the attack occasionally struggled to find rhythm outside of individual brilliance from Evander.

Still, the talent level throughout Cincinnati’s roster is undeniable. Evander has seamlessly taken over as the club’s creative centerpiece, recording seven goals already this season after posting one of the best attacking campaigns in MLS last year.

Kevin Denkey has added another dangerous scoring threat with eight goals of his own, while Pavel Bucha continues to quietly control matches in midfield and currently leads the team with four assists.

Defensively, the pairing of Matt Miazga and Miles Robinson gives Cincinnati one of the strongest center back duos in the league when healthy, and goalkeeper Roman Celentano remains one of MLS’ more reliable shot stoppers.

One of the more fascinating aspects of Cincinnati’s roster construction has been the club’s emphasis on attack-minded wingbacks.

Under general manager Chris Albright and head coach Pat Noonan, Cincinnati has consistently converted talented South American wingers into dangerous outside backs within their three-at-the-back system. With Luca Orellano departing after an inconsistent 2025 campaign, new additions Bryan Ramirez and young Venezuelan wingback Ender Echenique are expected to carry much of the attacking burden from wide areas. Echenique in particular has emerged as one of the league’s more exciting young players thanks to his ability to beat defenders one-on-one and create chances in transition.

Tactically, Cincinnati remains one of MLS’ more pragmatic teams. Noonan typically deploys either a 3-4-1-2 or 3-4-3 formation, prioritizing defensive structure while still allowing attacking freedom for players like Evander and Denkey. They are comfortable conceding possession against teams like San Diego but become extremely dangerous when counterattacking or attacking through wide overloads.

At times this season, Cincinnati has struggled with ball progression through central midfield. That imbalance has occasionally left the team looking dangerous but slightly disconnected.

San Diego FC Overview

For San Diego FC, Wednesday’s emphatic 5-0 victory over Austin FC felt like a potential turning point in the season. After weeks of dropped points and inconsistent performances, SDFC finally looked like the aggressive, free-flowing side that impressed so many observers earlier in the year. The attack was sharp, the midfield played with confidence, and the defense managed to keep its first clean sheet in several matches. The performance not only delivered three points, but also restored some belief around the club heading into another difficult test.

Much of San Diego’s success this season has centered around its ability to control possession and create dangerous moments through quick movement in the final third. Anders Dreyer continues to be one of the league’s most productive attacking players, while Marcus Ingvartsen has quietly become a vital piece of the front line with his movement and link-up play.

Mikey Varas has also started leaning more heavily on younger contributors like David Vazquez and Pedro Soma, players whose technical ability fits perfectly within SDFC’s possession-oriented style.

Defensively, however, consistency remains the biggest question mark for San Diego. During their recent poor run of form, SDFC often controlled stretches of matches only to be undone by transitional defending or individual mistakes. Against a Cincinnati team that thrives when games become open and chaotic, defensive organization will be critical.

Snapdragon Stadium has proven to be one of the louder environments in MLS, and SDFC will hope the home crowd can once again help fuel a fast start.
