San Diego FC heads to Portland on Wednesday night with something it hasn't had much of in 2026: momentum.

SDFC's 1-0 victory over LAFC on Saturday was a statement win against one of the hottest teams in MLS, handing LAFC its first loss in nine matches and just its third home loss of the MLS season. More importantly, San Diego looked like the team fans saw dominate the Western Conference during its inaugural campaign.

The win moved SDFC to 24 points, just one point outside the Western Conference playoff line with 15 matches still remaining. Now, the challenge is turning that momentum into another result against a Portland Timbers team that has already shown San Diego how dangerous it can be.

A Different Test in Portland

Portland enters Wednesday sitting 10th in the Western Conference with a 7-3-9 record and 24 points, level with San Diego but currently ahead on the table.

The Timbers have also already beaten SDFC once this season. Portland escaped Snapdragon Stadium with a 2-1 victory earlier in the year after scoring a stoppage-time winner in the 96th minute.

This time, San Diego will have to deal with Portland on its own field, where the Timbers can be an especially difficult opponent to break down.

Kevin Kelsy leads Portland with nine goals, while Kristoffer Velde has been the team's leading creator with the most assists. That attacking combination gives Portland a clear threat in transition, particularly if SDFC commits too many players forward.

For San Diego, the biggest priority will be avoiding the type of late-game mistake that cost them the first meeting.

Achouri's Debut Could Lead to His First Start

One of the biggest storylines coming out of the LAFC match was the debut of new Designated Player Elias Achouri.

Achouri entered in the second half and immediately looked comfortable on the ball. His ability to take on defenders and operate in tight spaces gave SDFC another attacking element that the team has been missing at times this season.

Now, he could be in line for his first start.

Anders Dreyer will miss Wednesday's match after receiving a second yellow card late against LAFC. The first yellow came after Dreyer removed his shirt while celebrating his game-winning penalty — a needless decision that ultimately put him in danger of missing the next match. His second yellow came moments later when he made a necessary tactical foul to stop a dangerous LAFC counterattack.

While the red card is an unfortunate consequence, it creates an opportunity for Achouri.

Against LAFC, San Diego overloaded the left side of the final 1/3 – a sign of the importance the team places on the LW position. Achouri could take on the heavy responsibility if given the opportunity to start.

The Tunisian winger now has a chance to step directly into the starting lineup and show what he can provide over 90 minutes. His one-on-one ability could be especially important against Portland if the Timbers sit back and force SDFC to break down their defensive shape.

SDFC Has to Keep the Momentum

The most encouraging part of Saturday's win was how SDFC defended.

San Diego limited LAFC to just three shots on target and looked far more composed without the ball. Manu Duah was outstanding, while Oscar Verhoeven and Luca Bombino helped keep LAFC's attack under control.

That defensive discipline will need to travel to Portland.

SDFC's possession-heavy style can put opponents under pressure, but it can also leave space behind the midfield when the ball is lost. Against a Portland team with Kelsy and Velde capable of quickly turning defensive wins into attacking opportunities, San Diego cannot afford careless turnovers.

At the other end, SDFC needs to continue finding ways to turn possession into dangerous chances. The team has won the expected-goals battle in four consecutive league matches, suggesting the performances have been better than the results earlier in the season indicated.

Now those performances are starting to translate into points.

The loss of Dreyer is significant. His nine assists and ability to create something out of nothing have been a major part of SDFC's attack. But Achouri's arrival gives Mikey Varas another player capable of providing that individual spark.

A win in Portland would be another major step forward.

San Diego has already climbed within one point of the playoff line. With Portland sitting on the same 24 points, Wednesday's match is essentially a six-pointer in the Western Conference race.

SDFC has spent much of 2026 trying to rediscover the identity that made it so successful in its inaugural season.

Saturday in Los Angeles provided perhaps the clearest sign yet that it's coming back.

Now comes the harder part: proving it wasn't a one-night performance.
