San Diego FC returns to MLS action this Sunday, March 22nd at Snapdragon Stadium when they take on Real Salt Lake.

It's been a busy month of March for SDFC. Playing five games in 18 days is not easy but that's a privilege only a few of the top clubs get to have. The match against RSL represents the third game in eight days and only four days after playing in 8,000+ feet of elevation.

Head coach Mikey Varas isn't thinking about rest ahead of the RSL match.

"It's about going into this game and going after it with everything we've got, I don't think we're thinking about resting or anything like that, it's about having a great bounce-back performance and making a clear case statement for the rest of our season," said Varas.

Real Salt Lake Overview

Real Salt Lake comes into this matchup as a team that’s had to reset after a disappointing 2025 season. A year removed from being one of the more exciting possession-based teams in the league, RSL struggled to maintain that identity after losing key attacking pieces like Andrés Gómez and Chicho Arango.

Without that firepower, their offense stalled, and the results followed, ultimately ending in an early playoff exit and a clear need for change.

That change showed up in a big way this offseason.

The front office brought in several new pieces expected to contribute right away. Forward Morgan Guilavogui headlines the additions as a new Designated Player, while players like Juan Manuel Sanabria, Stijn Spierings, and Lukas Engel add balance across the field.

The goal is simple: rebuild a more complete, structured team that can control games again and avoid the inconsistencies that defined last year.

Tactically, RSL still leans toward a controlled, possession-oriented style under head coach Pablo Mastroeni. Mastroeni deployed a 3-4-3 system that brought success to the club. They’re not a team that will press relentlessly, but they are organized, disciplined, and capable of building through the midfield.

Now, early in the 2026 season, the results suggest progress. RSL has bounced back from an opening loss with three straight wins and currently sits in the top half of the Western Conference.

Young talents like Diego Luna and Zavier Gozo are stepping into bigger roles, while the new additions are beginning to settle in. For San Diego FC, this presents a different kind of challenge — a team that is more structured and confident than last year but still proving whether they can consistently perform at the level needed to compete with one of the West’s early frontrunners.

San Diego FC Overview

With the CCC now behind them, Varas spoke about "flipping the chip" to fully focus on the MLS competition. Guys like defender Manu Duah and forward Marcus Ingvartsen are well rested, having missed the match against Toluca due to red cards.

The rest of the team? Not so much. SDFC focused on recovery this week as players are dealing with soreness, trying to rest as much as possible in between training sessions. From a mental standpoint, the group is focused on resetting and moving past the loss. There’s still plenty left to play for this season — including a run in Leagues Cup and, most importantly, the MLS Cup.

Dealing with RSL's 3-4-3 formation won't be easy. Mastroeni's side likes to play wide on the wings to open up space through the middle as well as put the ball in the danger area via the cross. If SDFC wants to be successful, they'll need to play efficiently out of the back, drawing in high pressure and precisely passing it into the forwards, like they've done against other MLS teams this year.
