After earning nine out of a possible nine points to open the MLS season, San Diego FC now faces its biggest challenge so far. Liga MX giants, Toluca, await in the second round of the Concacaf Champions Cup on Wednesday night at Snapdragon Stadium.
Toluca arguably represents the toughest opponent that San Diego has ever faced in their young history.
"We get to play against the best, and that's what we want," said SDFC head coach Mikey Varas. "You challenge yourself against the best and you see where you stand."
The Mexican side earned the number one seed and had a bye in the first round of the tournament. Conversely, SDFC battled Pumas UNAM to get through to the second round. The challenge now becomes finding a way to overcome one of the strongest teams in North America.

Toluca Overview
Toluca has been one of the most dominant teams in Liga MX over the past year, winning both the Apertura and Clausura titles in 2025. Simply put — this is a club that knows how to win and knows how to score.
Toluca’s attack is loaded with talent across the field. Creative midfielders like Jesús Angulo, Nicolás Castro, and Helinho give them multiple ways to break down defenses, whether it’s through quick passing combinations or dangerous runs into the final third.
Toluca is comfortable surrendering possession while defending with numbers. Their biggest threat is how comfortable they are in the counterattack. With quick team transitions and match fitness that comes with playing at high altitude, this squad of players is ready to run the entire field in transitions for 90 minutes.

Meanwhile, Mexican international Alexis Vega remains one of their biggest gamechangers. After putting together an incredible 2024–25 season, Vega has recently returned from injury and adds even more firepower to an already dangerous attack.
Up front, the biggest threat may be striker Joao Fernandes, better known as Paulinho. The 6’2” Portuguese forward has been one of the most productive goal scorers in Liga MX since arriving from Portugal. He’s strong in the air, dangerous inside the box, and rarely misses a good scoring chance.
If San Diego FC can find a way past Toluca FC, several MLS pundits believe the club will start to be viewed in the same tier as league powerhouses such as Los Angeles FC, the Columbus Crew under Wilfried Nancy, and Inter Miami CF.
Toluca enters the match in excellent form and hasn’t lost many games in recent months, meaning SDFC will need to be at their best to compete with one of Liga MX’s elite clubs.

San Diego FC Overview
The home side enters this match having played only half as many games as Toluca so far this year. While Toluca arrives unbeaten in ten matches, San Diego FC has already shown it is capable of slaying dragons. Mikey Varas’ squad often embraces the underdog role, something they recently proved by defeating Liga MX side Pumas UNAM.
A win at home is virtually a must for San Diego as the second leg of this clash will be played at the highest altitude SDFC have ever played. If the away match against Pumas was any indication of how difficult it is to play a full 90 for these players, consider Toluca’s stadium, sitting at roughly 8,750 feet above sea level, another major challenge.
SDFC's key to winning the match at home will be making use of their possession. It's a simple concept, but hard to execute. Especially against a team of Toluca's caliber. Still, in all three matches against MLS opponents, SDFC gave the critics little to doubt that they're using creative ways to score goals - turning possession into chances and staying dangerous in the opponent's half.
Playing on only a few days' rest, Varas will tread carefully when deciding his starting lineup. Injuries at the beginning of the season tend to put teams a step behind. San Diego’s depth is young. Those players are capable of performing at the level Varas expects, but keeping the team’s veteran leaders healthy early in the season remains crucial.
After five matches, it's easy to see that the chemistry between the players is different than last year. The team is clicking – evident by the pass-and-move beautiful soccer that has been on display this year. Everything San Diego has built to this point has led them here. Wednesday night represents their toughest test yet, though Varas believes the ceiling is even higher.
“We’re still hungry and we know we can get better.”
