San Diego FC is adding another young prospect to its midfield, bringing in 18-year-old David Mimbang on loan from sister club FC Nordsjælland through the end of the 2027 MLS Sprint Season.
The club announced the move Wednesday, Sept. 2, with Mimbang set to occupy an international roster slot. His addition to the SDFC roster is pending receipt of his P1 Visa.
The move continues San Diego FC's close relationship with FC Nordsjælland and the Right to Dream pathway, which has become a central part of the club's player-development strategy.
“David is a player we’ve been tracking closely within Right to Dream, and bringing him to San Diego was a real group effort and a great example of the collaboration across our sporting departments,” SDFC Sporting Director Tyler Heaps said.
“We’re excited to welcome a midfielder with tremendous potential who brings a different profile and skill set to our group. He has the physical tools, technical quality and mentality to continue developing, and we believe San Diego FC is a great environment for him to take that next step.”
Who is David Mimbang?
Mimbang was born in Cameroon on Aug. 15, 2008, and has already gained significant experience at the youth international level despite being just 18 years old.
He represented Cameroon at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations U-17 tournament, starting all four of the country's matches and playing all 360 minutes. Mimbang scored once during the competition.
He also helped Cameroon win the 2025 UNIFFAC U-17 title and was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player.
Before making the move to Europe, Mimbang developed with Cameroonian club Brasseries. His performances at the 2025 CAF U-17 Africa Cup of Nations helped put him on FC Nordsjælland's radar, eventually leading to his move to the Danish club.
Now, his development will continue in San Diego.
Another piece of the Right to Dream pipeline
The biggest takeaway from the move may be how closely it fits into the club's larger philosophy.
San Diego FC and FC Nordsjælland are both connected to the Right to Dream organization, giving the two clubs a unique opportunity to move young talent through different stages of development.
Mimbang's arrival is another example of that relationship in action.
Rather than bringing in an established veteran, SDFC is acquiring a teenager who has already shown promise internationally and giving him an opportunity to develop within its MLS environment.
At 5-foot-9, Mimbang is not the biggest midfielder on the field, but SDFC's description of him points toward a player whose physical ability, technical quality and mentality are viewed as important parts of his potential.
The club will now have the opportunity to see how those qualities translate to the professional game in MLS.
What does this mean for SDFC?
Mimbang's arrival is unlikely to be viewed as a move designed to immediately transform SDFC's starting lineup. Instead, this looks like an investment in the club's future.
At 18, Mimbang has plenty of time to grow into a larger role, and the length of the loan gives SDFC an extended window to evaluate his development.
It also adds another young option to a midfield group that continues to evolve as SDFC builds out its roster.
For a club that has made player development a major part of its identity, Mimbang represents another opportunity to find talent early and develop it in San Diego.
And with the loan running through the end of the 2027 MLS Sprint Season, SDFC will have plenty of time to see what the young midfielder can become.
