San Diego Wave Rescue Point at Kansas City Behind Trinity Byars' Brace

San Diego Wave FC traveled to CPKC Stadium on Friday night to face the Kansas City Current in a matchup between two National Women's Soccer League title contenders. The Wave entered the night atop the NWSL standings, while Kansas City looked to protect its unbeaten home record and continue climbing the table in front of a sold-out crowd.

Both teams arrived looking to bounce back from disappointing losses. San Diego fell 2-0 to rival Angel City FC despite controlling possession and creating numerous scoring opportunities, while the Current suffered a 3-0 defeat to the Orlando Pride. With both clubs eager to respond, Friday's match carried added significance in the race for the NWSL Shield.

Kansas City entered the contest with a commanding 6-1-1 advantage in the all-time regular-season series and had yet to lose at CPKC Stadium this season. San Diego, however, showed little hesitation against one of the league's toughest opponents, setting the tone early before an end-to-end battle unfolded.

The First Half

The Wave spent the opening minutes absorbing Kansas City's pressure as Temwa Chawinga and Croix Bethune made dangerous overlapping runs into the penalty area.

San Diego quickly settled into the match and took control through patient build-up from the back. In the sixth minute, Kimmi Ascanio slipped the ball to Gia Corley, who burst down the left side of the box before driving a low cross across goal. Trinity Byars timed her run perfectly and tapped home from close range to give the Wave an early 1-0 lead.

Kansas City responded by pushing numbers forward. The Current repeatedly looked to exploit the space behind San Diego's defense with long balls aimed at Chawinga and Bethune, but the Wave back line stayed organized and cut out every opportunity.

Even while protecting their lead, San Diego continued to threaten on the counterattack. After winning possession, Kenza Dali threaded a pass behind the Current defense for Byars. The forward charged into the box and fired a cross toward Corley, forcing Kansas City to concede a corner.

The Wave's defense remained difficult to break down, but Kansas City gradually found more possession as San Diego's attacking movement stretched the match from end to end.

Play paused in the 30th minute for a hydration break as temperatures reached a humid 86 degrees.

The stoppage gave the Current a chance to regroup, and they came out on the front foot. Haley Hopkins drove toward the end line and whipped a cross into the box, but the Wave defense cleared the danger before Kansas City could capitalize.

Bethune and Hopkins each had chances to level the match before halftime, but neither could find the target as the Current's improved spell of possession failed to produce an equalizer.

The referee's whistle ended the first half with San Diego taking a 1-0 lead into the locker room.

The Second Half

San Diego opened the second half with purpose. Gia Corley stripped Kansas City of possession three times in the opening minutes and drove through midfield, but the Current adjusted quickly. Their back line closed passing lanes and denied the Wave the space they exploited before halftime.

Kansas City nearly found an equalizer moments later. Croix Bethune led the counterattack before slipping a pass into Temwa Chawinga. Chawinga fired on goal, but Luisa Agudelo stood tall to make the save and push the danger away for a corner.

The pressure finally paid off. After the ensuing sequence, Haley Hopkins beat Perle Morroni down the right flank and delivered a cross into the box. Bethune met the service with a first-time volley and buried the equalizer.

The goal shifted the momentum entirely. San Diego continued looking for runs through the middle from Kenza Dali and Corley, but Kansas City's defense anticipated every pass and shut down the Wave's attack before it could develop.

Jonas Eidevall responded with his first substitutions, bringing on Lia Godfrey and Gabi Portilho for Ludmila and Corley.

The changes came just before Kansas City struck again. Chawinga slipped behind Mimi Van Zanten, collected Bethune's through ball, and calmly finished to give the Current a 2-1 lead.

From there, Kansas City controlled the match. The Current pressed relentlessly, forced turnovers high up the field, closed every passing lane, and repeatedly drove into dangerous areas. San Diego struggled to play through the pressure or establish any sustained possession.

Chawinga nearly extended the lead on another dangerous break, but Kennedy Wesley produced an outstanding one-on-one defensive stop to keep the Wave within a goal.

Another hydration break gave Eidevall a chance to regroup his squad, and he turned to Melanie Barcenas for Laurina Fazer. Barcenas made an immediate impact, curling a dangerous effort from the left wing that forced a save.

Kansas City continued to threaten in transition. Chawinga earned a dangerous free kick after racing past the Wave defense, but Godfrey stepped in to intercept the delivery before the Current could capitalize.

With time running out, Eidevall made one final change, introducing Tatum Wynalda for Morroni as San Diego searched desperately for an equalizer.

The breakthrough finally came deep into stoppage time. Dali switched play to Van Zanten on the right, and the defender delivered a cross into the penalty area. Portilho redirected the ball into the path of Kristen McNabb, whose shot was blocked by Marisa Jordan. The rebound fell perfectly for Trinity Byars, who reacted first and tapped home to rescue a dramatic late equalizer.

After spending much of the second half under relentless pressure, the Wave showed resilience when it mattered most. Kansas City seized control after halftime, but San Diego never stopped searching for an answer. Byars' second goal of the night ensured the Wave escaped CPKC Stadium with a hard-earned point.
