Match Recap: San Diego Wave Take Down North Carolina Courage in Crucial 2-1 Win

San Diego Wave FC returned to Snapdragon Stadium Saturday afternoon for a crucial matchup against the North Carolina Courage. With both teams entering the afternoon on 39 points, the Wave needed three points to gain ground in the playoff race and separate themselves from the Courage in the standings.

San Diego entered the match with several changes from its previous game. Jordan Fusco had departed on loan to Racing Louisville FC, while new signing Barbara Bonansea joined the team on loan from Juventus. Mimi Van Zanten was also unavailable through suspension, opening the door for Brooklyn Courtnall to make her first start for the Wave. With the temperature hovering around 80 degrees at kickoff, the heat added another challenge to an already high-stakes afternoon.

The Courage arrived with plenty of momentum after a 6-0 win over the Chicago Stars, led by Ashley Sanchez's record-breaking hat trick. San Diego knew it would need to contain one of the league's hottest attackers while finding enough offense of its own to claim three points.

The First Half

The Wave and the Courage sprinted into position for kickoff as the Sirens welcomed former Wave goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan back to Snapdragon Stadium.

San Diego nearly struck first. Perle Morroni cut the ball inside to Melanie Barcenas, who tapped it into the net past Sheridan. The celebration was short-lived, however, as the referee ruled Barcenas offside in the buildup and waved the goal away.

The Wave kept pushing. Morroni sent a long cross into the box and found Lia Godfrey near the top of the area. Godfrey tried to get a shot away, but a Courage defender closed her down before she could test Sheridan.

Both teams then settled into a physical midfield battle. Neither side could consistently break through, and the attacks that reached the penalty area lacked the final touch needed to open the scoring.

Then Brooklyn Courtnall changed everything.

Courtnall carried the ball down the right side and reached the edge of the box before cutting a cross back toward Gia Corley. Corley met the ball with a powerful strike that ripped into the back of the net, giving San Diego a 1-0 lead.

The Courage immediately looked for a response. North Carolina pushed forward and forced the Wave to defend deeper, creating two dangerous chances in quick succession. Sandra Paños stood tall, first denying Ashley Sanchez before stopping another effort from Chioma Okafor.

Paños had answers for both of North Carolina's best chances, keeping the Wave in front.

The heat soon forced both teams into a hydration break. Players gathered around their coaches as Jonas Eidevall and the Courage staff looked for ways to break open the match.

When play resumed, the midfield stalemate returned. North Carolina held a slight edge in possession and attacking pressure, but the Courage struggled to turn that pressure into a clear-cut chance. Several attempts sailed off target or landed comfortably in Paños' hands.

The Wave held onto their advantage through the final minutes of the half and headed into the locker room with a 1-0 lead.

The Second Half

The midfield battle continued after halftime. San Diego looked to stretch the Courage with wide runs from Perle Morroni and Brooklyn Courtnall, hoping to create more room for the attack.

The strategy nearly paid off. Lia Godfrey found space through the middle, and Melanie Barcenas launched the ball forward to her. Godfrey fired toward goal, but Sheridan was in position to make the save.

Eidevall made his first change of the afternoon, bringing Laila Harbert on for goal scorer Gia Corley. Kimmi Ascanio moved into a wider attacking role as Harbert provided fresh legs in the defensive midfield.

Harbert and Courtnall immediately went to work. The pair pressured Feli Rauch and Ashley Sanchez as the Courage tried to build down the left flank, preventing North Carolina from finding an easy route into the final third.

Then Barcenas broke the game open.

The young forward battled through midfield pressure, carried the ball into the box and fired a shot past Sheridan. This time there was no whistle. The ball hit the back of the net, and San Diego doubled its lead.

Eidevall made two more changes, sending Adriana Leon and Laurina Fazer onto the field for Trinity Byars and Kimmi Ascanio. The fresh legs gave San Diego another boost as the Wave looked to protect their two-goal advantage.

The Courage refused to go quietly.

Moments after the substitutions, Sanchez found space on the left side of the box. She fired across goal and into the top-right corner, cutting San Diego's lead to 2-1 and giving North Carolina new life.

The Wave answered by pushing forward. Leon and Fazer combined to create an attacking opportunity that earned San Diego a corner, but the Courage defense blocked the delivery before it could threaten Sheridan's goal.

The clock continued to tick away, but the pressure from North Carolina kept building. With only three minutes of regular time remaining, the Courage earned a dangerous free kick just outside the box.

The Sirens rallied the Snapdragon Stadium crowd, leading the fans in a loud "Let's Go Wave!" chant as North Carolina prepared to deliver the ball into the box.

The cross came in dangerously, but Paños and the Wave back line stood firm and cleared the danger.

With the final minutes approaching, Eidevall made one last defensive move. He pulled Barcenas from the field and brought on Nya Harrison, giving the Wave two right backs on the field to help contain Sanchez and protect the lead.

North Carolina threw everything forward, but San Diego refused to break.

Three whistles from the referee brought the match to an end. The Wave held on for a 2-1 victory, earning three crucial points and strengthening their position in the NWSL playoff race.
