San Diego Wave FC will return home Friday night to host Denver Summit FC at Snapdragon Stadium. The Wave enter the matchup at 10-6-2 with 32 points, while Denver sits at 6-5-7 with 23 points. The match kicks off at 7 p.m. PT, with San Diego looking to turn its home-field advantage into a much-needed result.
The last time these teams met, the Wave delivered one of their most memorable comebacks of the season. San Diego went into halftime trailing 2-0 after Denver struck twice in the opening 45 minutes, but the Wave completely flipped the script after the break. Lia Godfrey, Kennedy Wesley and Dudinha helped fuel a three-goal second half that sent San Diego home with a dramatic 3-2 victory. Now, the Wave will look to prove that comeback was more than a one-off performance.
San Diego is coming off a narrow 1-0 loss to Gotham FC and has gone through an inconsistent stretch of results. With goal-scorer Dudinha on the SEI list, the Wave will have to find ways to create goals without one of their most dangerous attacking players. Denver, meanwhile, enters the match looking to collect three points and climb the table. With both teams having plenty to play for, Friday's rematch could offer another hard-fought battle at Snapdragon

Denver Summit Overview
Denver Summit FC enters its meeting with San Diego Wave FC coming off a dramatic 2-1 victory over the Utah Royals. After a scoreless first half, Yazmeen Ryan opened the scoring in the 51st minute before Utah equalized in the 89th. The Summit responded in stoppage time, with Janine Sonis scoring the winner on a free kick in the 90+4th minute. The victory gave Denver four points from its three home matches during the week and moved the Summit to 23 points in the standings.
The Wave will have some confidence from the last meeting between these teams. San Diego overcame a two-goal deficit to defeat Denver 3-2 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park on April 25. The Summit controlled the first half and took a 2-0 lead through Melissa Kössler and Natasha Flint, but the Wave completely shifted the match after halftime. San Diego took 63% possession in the second half, scoring through Lia Godfrey and Kennedy Wesley before a Dudinha strike deflected off Carson Pickett for the winning own goal.
Player to Watch
Janine Sonis has emerged as one of Denver’s most important players, and she is entering this match in excellent form. The 31-year-old defender has eight goals and three assists in 17 appearances, with 24 shots and 12 shots on target. Her eight goals are tied for the team lead, while her 11 total goal contributions are a career best.

Sonis has also been particularly dangerous from set pieces and the penalty spot. She scored twice against Orlando, converted a penalty against Boston and most recently delivered the stoppage-time free kick that gave Denver all three points against Utah. She also assisted Ryan’s opening goal against the Royals, showing that her impact extends beyond finishing chances. The Wave will need to account for her not only as a defender, but as a consistent attacking threat who can change the game from dead-ball situations.
How the Wave Can Exploit Denver’s Weaknesses
The biggest opportunity for San Diego may be to keep Denver from turning possession and pressure into dangerous chances. The Summit can create a high volume of attacking opportunities, but their recent results show that pressure does not always translate into efficient finishing. Denver outshot North Carolina 17-14 and had 27 touches in the opposition box, yet the Courage produced 2.49 expected goals compared to Denver’s 0.97 and ultimately won 2-0.
San Diego can also look to replicate what worked in the second half of the April meeting. The Wave took control of possession after halftime, attacked Denver with greater consistency and eventually turned a 2-0 deficit into a 3-2 victory. Set pieces could be another avenue for the Wave, as Kennedy Wesley scored from a corner in that comeback. With Denver coming off another match where its defense was tested by sustained pressure, San Diego should look to move the ball quickly, force the Summit to defend for extended stretches and capitalize when chances arrive rather than allowing Denver to dictate the tempo.

San Diego Wave FC Overview
San Diego Wave FC will enter Saturday’s matchup looking to reverse its recent momentum after falling 1-0 to Gotham FC on August 7. The Wave battled the league-leading side in a physical, defensive match at Sports Illustrated Stadium, but Jaedyn Shaw’s first-half goal proved to be the difference. San Diego created opportunities of its own, including a Laurina Fazer shot that sailed just over the crossbar, but Gotham’s organized defense kept the Wave from finding an equalizer.
The loss followed a 1-0 victory over the Washington Spirit in difficult conditions at Audi Field. The Wave have now gone 1-2-1 across their last four matches, also falling 2-0 to Seattle Reign and drawing 2-2 with Kansas City Current. While the recent results have been inconsistent, San Diego’s defense has continued to keep matches close. The bigger concern heading into Denver is finding the attacking consistency needed to turn those tight games into points.
Player to Watch
Mimi Van Zanten has quietly become an important piece of the Wave’s lineup during her rookie season. The right back has appeared in all 19 matches, playing 1,502 minutes, and has contributed one goal, nine shots and five shots on target. Defensively, Van Zanten has recorded 38 tackles and 31 interceptions, while completing 79 percent of her passes.

Her value goes beyond the numbers. Van Zanten provides the Wave with pace and energy on the right side, allowing San Diego to quickly transition from defending into attack. She has repeatedly shown an ability to push forward and provide service, including a cross to Trinity Byars against Seattle and a dangerous ball toward Laurina Fazer against Gotham. She also played an important defensive role against Washington, working with Kennedy Wesley to limit Trinity Rodman’s opportunities.
The Formula for Success
San Diego already has the blueprint for beating Denver. In the teams’ first meeting, the Wave trailed 2-0 at halftime before completely changing the match after the break. Lia Godfrey scored three minutes into the second half, Kennedy Wesley equalized from a corner and Dudinha’s dangerous cross forced a Denver own goal. San Diego’s relentless second-half pressure turned a two-goal deficit into a 3-2 comeback win.
The challenge this time will be finding that attacking intensity earlier. The Wave can use their speed on the wings to stretch Denver’s back line, particularly through Van Zanten, while Godfrey and the forwards look to exploit space through the middle. Set pieces should also remain an important avenue, especially after Wesley’s header helped spark the previous comeback. If San Diego can establish pressure early, move Denver’s defense from side to side and consistently turn possession into shots, the Wave should have opportunities to find the goals that have been missing in recent matches.
