Second Half Season Preview, San Diego FC Takes on Colorado Rapids

The World Cup is over. The lucky few players that got to participate on the world's stage are back training with their respective clubs. For MLS, this second part of the season will prove to be very important as new fans, captivated by the high-drama and excitement of the World Cup, turn their eyes on their domestic league.

San Diego FC hopes to be a small part of bringing that excitement through their trademark exciting play style when they take on the Colorado Rapids in Colorado on Wednesday night. Let's dive in.

San Diego FC Overview

Mikey Varas' team turned things around for the better to close out the first part of the season. SDFC are 1W-3D-1L in their last five matches played. Since then, the club had time to reflect back on their performance to date and make adjustments not only to the roster but also to the way they want to approach the rest of the season in the way they play.

Roster Additions

San Diego FC added two players to the roster during the World Cup break. Defender Ian Murphy and midfielder Gabriel Pirani.

With the number of injuries that SDFC sustained when it comes to their defense, it's only practical that Tyler Heaps added reinforcements. Murphy brings valuable MLS experience. At 26 years old, Murphy made 105 appearances (68 starts) for FC Cincinnati across all competitions from 2022-24, including 80 MLS regular-season appearances before joining Colorado on Dec. 9, 2024.

Pirani is a creative midfielder that is great at getting into tight spaces, drawing in defenders, and creating dangerous opportunities on the offensive side of the ball. He's a strong finisher who plays with that extra Brazilian flair that so many people love to see and will complement Pedro Soma nicely.

“His creativity, technical ability, and attacking qualities will strengthen our competition within the squad as we prepare for a busy second half of the season. We’re excited to welcome him and his family to San Diego FC," said Heaps.

Looking Ahead

Currently, SDFC are only three points away from a playoff spot. A strong finish to the season may mean getting into a prime position to be competitive in the playoffs. Heaps told the media that the club is not done signing players and are looking at multiple players who they would still like to bring in. The MLS summer transfer window is open now through September 2, 2026, which leaves plenty of time to add to the roster. Heaps was clear in that the club is still looking to add a strong left midfielder to help replace the services of Hirving Lozano, who is still working out details to be moved elsewhere.

The Danish duo of Marcus Ingvartsen and Anders Dreyer continue to be the main offensive threat for the club. Ingvartsen comes into the match with 11 goals on the tally sheet while Dreyer leads the team with nine assists. The duo will get some much-needed help from a fellow Danish international when Jeppe Tverskov comes back into the center mid role. Tverskov is coming off of a leg injury but has been playing long minutes in training and exhibition games.

Friendly Competition

With the return of Tverskov, Varas' job gets a little tougher as he will now have to get creative with where to play Pedro Soma - someone who has improved greatly and integrated himself as a big part of the club during Tverskov's absence.

Of course, these are all good things. Having challenges of who to play where is a coach's dream. It also creates friendly competition on the training ground where guys will push each other to prove to the training staff that they are ready for match minutes.

Midfield

The midfield also gets another boost with the return of Alejandro Alvarado. An ACL injury kept Alvarado out of action from the end of 2025 up until recently. Alvarado was used a substitute toward the end of the first part of the season this year and has been a full participant in training as he will fight to make a case for valuable minutes.

Defense

Defensively, SDFC will be without Luca Bombino, who is serving a one-match ban for receiving a red card during the loss to Vancouver in San Diego's last match prior to the break.

Manu Duah continues to grow into a defensive leader, alongside Chris McVey. Many MLS pundits predicted that Duah will not be a part of SDFC after the summer transfer window as he's drawn much interest internationally. If Duah was to move on to bigger clubs internationally, SDFC would surely receive a record transfer fee for an MLS defender.

Wednesday's clash in Colorado will be a good indicator of where this team stands when it comes to improvements in their ball movement up the field and transitional defense, something the club struggled with in the first part of the season. If SDFC wants to go far this season, they must get back to their creative ball movement and a high offensive output they showcased in 2025. Most importantly, the red cards need to stop. In 2026, San Diego FC remains the most ill-disciplined team in the MLS.

Colorado Rapids

Colorado Overview

Colorado Rapids is a team that has been one of the more intriguing tactical stories in the league this season. Under first-year head coach Matt Wells, the Rapids have undergone a complete identity change, moving away from the direct, physical style they were known for in recent years in favor of a possession-heavy system built on patience and intelligent buildup from the back.

Colorado is comfortable playing through pressure and ranks among MLS's most patient teams in possession, often building attacks from deep rather than bypassing the midfield. Wells even uses pre-planned sideline signals on goal kicks to help his team identify the best passing options depending on how opponents press. It's a unique approach that reflects his belief that controlling the ball is the best way to control matches. Rather than relying on long balls, the Rapids are willing to take risks in possession, trusting their structure to break opposing pressure.

The player San Diego will need to keep a close eye on is Brazilian striker Rafael Navarro. With eight goals and four assists, Navarro has become the focal point of Colorado's attack, but not in the traditional sense. He frequently drops into midfield to link play before making late runs into the box, creating space for teammates and helping overload central areas. Midfielder Wayne Frederick, who leads the club with five assists, has also been an important creator, while Colorado's wingers are tasked with staying high and wide to stretch opposing back lines.

Despite the encouraging start under Wells, the Rapids entered the summer break struggling for results. Colorado won just one of its final eight MLS matches, and fatigue appeared to catch up with a squad asked to play an extremely demanding style during a congested stretch of the schedule. The break may have come at the perfect time, giving the Rapids a chance to recharge while continuing to grow into Wells' system.

For San Diego FC, this presents an intriguing tactical battle. Both clubs prefer to dominate possession and patiently build attacks, meaning Saturday's match could become a chess match in midfield. If SDFC can disrupt Colorado's buildup with its aggressive high press while limiting Navarro's influence between the lines, the home side will put itself in a strong position to begin the second half of the season with three points.
