Wave Address Center-Back Depth with Brooklyn Courtnall Loan

San Diego Wave FC addressed a growing need along its backline on Friday, announcing the acquisition of defender Brooklyn Courtnall on loan from Bay FC through the remainder of the 2026 NWSL season. The move comes at a critical time for San Diego, which has seen its center-back depth depleted in recent weeks.

The Wave entered the second half of the season shorthanded in central defense following the departure of Colombian international Daniela Arias and another devastating season-ending knee injury to Trinity Armstrong. With limited natural center-back options available, Courtnall gives head coach Jonas Eidevall another experienced defender capable of competing for minutes immediately.

"We're excited to welcome Brooklyn to San Diego," Sporting Director and General Manager Camille Ashton said in the club's announcement. "She is a talented young defender with strong defensive instincts and versatility who will strengthen our backline and add valuable depth to our group this season."

The 23-year-old Los Angeles native arrives after making 11 appearances, including seven starts, for Bay FC this season. Although Bay views Courtnall as part of its long-term plans, head coach Emma Coates said the loan provides an opportunity for the young defender to continue earning consistent playing time through the end of the season. With former Wave captain Abby Dahlkemper recently returning from maternity leave, competition for minutes in San Jose was expected to increase, making the move beneficial for both player and club.

Courtnall has quickly established herself as one of Canada's promising young defenders. She earned her first senior national team call-up earlier this year and made her debut during the 2026 SheBelieves Cup, helping Canada capture the silver medal. Before turning professional, she was a four-year starter at USC, where she earned First Team All-American and First Team All-Big Ten honors while helping lead the Trojans to the 2024 Big Ten regular-season championship and an NCAA Tournament quarterfinal appearance.

Courtnall began her professional career with the North Carolina Courage in 2025 before joining Bay FC on loan later that season. Bay completed a permanent transfer ahead of the 2026 campaign, signing her to a three-year contract before agreeing to this temporary move to San Diego.

While Courtnall may not immediately step into the starting lineup, her arrival gives the Wave much-needed depth at a position that has been tested by injuries and departures throughout the season. With San Diego firmly in the playoff race, adding another capable center back provides valuable insurance as the club prepares for the final stretch of the 2026 campaign.
