San Diego FC made a roster move on Wednesday, January 7th when the club announced that Heine Gikling Bruseth will not be coming back to San Diego after his loan spell with Sarpsborg 08. The move may be a confirmation of a rumor regarding an incoming player.

Instead, Bruseth will join Kristiansund Bk in Norway's Eliteserien. SDFC retains a sell-on percentage which means that if Bruseth is sold to another club, SDFC will receive a portion of the transfer money.

Bruseth, 21, arrived at San Diego FC as part of the club’s initial roster build, having been selected as one of five players in the 2025 MLS Expansion Draft on Dec. 11, 2024. Viewed as a young piece with developmental upside, his selection reflected SDFC’s desire to add depth and long-term potential during its inaugural offseason.

During the 2025 MLS regular season, Bruseth was named to the matchday roster on nine separate occasions. His lone appearance came in a high-profile international friendly against Club América on July 7. Bruseth joined Sarpsborg 08 on loan through the reminder of the 2025 season on July 10th.

The move creates additional flexibility on the roster, as Bruseth had been one of three players occupying a U-22 Initiative slot. With that spot now open, it potentially clears the path for a new addition, adding fuel to speculation that Osvald Soe could be San Diego FC’s next signing and the player brought in to fill the newly available U-22 role.
