San Diego FC announced Wednesday that they've extended the contract of Anders Dreyer through the 2028-29 year with club options through the 2029-30 season.
Fans were taken on a wild ride of emotions last week. It's fair to say the fanbase could use some good news.
Training camp started a week earlier than most teams due to a busier, multi-competition upcoming season. While addressing the media during the first week of training, Sporting Director Tyler Heaps surprised many by revealing that San Diego FC would be parting ways with Chucky Lozano.
The news was most received in a mixed way. Some fans blamed the front office for mismanaging the situation, while others sided with Heaps and understood the message he was trying to portray.
Heaps and co. doubled down on that message by extending Dreyer.

Dreyer carried San Diego FC on his back. He finished the regular season with 19 goals, tied for third most in MLS, and led the entire league with 19 assists. When you add in every competition, he piled up 45 total goal contributions, scoring 23 times and setting up 22 more, including a huge postseason run where he added four goals and two assists in just five matches. Nearly half of SDFC’s goals came directly from Dreyer, a massive reason why the club topped the Western Conference and punched its ticket to the 2026 Concacaf Champions Cup.
For a first-year star, his impact was unreal. Dreyer totaled 38 goal contributions in league play alone — second-best in MLS — and earned a spot as one of three SDFC players selected to the 2025 MLS All-Star team. He twice took home Player of the Matchday honors and was named MLS Player of the Month in both June and August, making history as only the second player ever — and the first for SDFC — to win that award multiple times for an expansion team in its first season.
Dreyer’s contract extension follows a series of renewals awarded to several key contributors, including Jeppe Tverskov, Luca Bombino, and Onni Valakari, as the club continues to secure the core of its roster.
So, while the front office continues to look for ways to move Lozano's contract and open up a DP spot, it seems they've found the DP who's worthy of their long-term investment.
