Brazilian international Gabi Portilho is officially headed to San Diego.

The San Diego Wave FC announced Monday that the club acquired the forward from NJ/NY Gotham FC in exchange for $175,000 in intraleague transfer funds. It’s a straightforward move on paper, but one that could carry ripple effects for the rest of the Wave’s transfer window.

Portilho arrives after helping Gotham lift the 2025 NWSL Championship, contributing three goals and three assists across 17 appearances in her debut season in the league. The 30-year-old Brazilian international brings big-game experience, having won Copa América in 2025 and earned Olympic silver in Paris in 2024.

What this means for the Cat Macario rumors

The timing is notable.

For weeks, the Wave were rumored frontrunners for Catarina Macario, currently with Chelsea FC Women. With Portilho now added to an already attack-heavy roster, it feels increasingly unlikely that Macario is part of San Diego’s immediate plans.

Could the front office still make a splash? Sure. But this move signals that the Wave are investing in a different direction, one that leans into chemistry and continuity rather than another marquee headline.

How she fits

On the field, the fit makes a lot of sense.

A projected front three of Dudinha, Ludmila, and Portilho gives San Diego a fully Brazilian attacking trio that is dynamic, direct, and comfortable in quick combination play. There is a natural understanding there, both culturally and stylistically. Portilho’s ability to press, drift wide, and arrive late in the box should complement the pace and creativity already in place.

She may not dominate the stat sheet every week, but her work rate and movement could quietly elevate the entire attacking unit.

If the Wave are set up top, attention likely turns to the other side of the ball. Defensive depth and reinforcement still feel like areas that could use strengthening this window. If San Diego can pair this attacking boost with a solid defensive addition, the roster will start to look much more complete.

For now, the Wave have added a proven winner and reshaped the conversation around what comes next.
