San Diego FC has strengthened its back line with the addition of Icelandic international Dagur Dan Thórhallsson, acquiring the versatile defender from CF Montréal in exchange for up to $625,000 total in General Allocation Money.
The 26-year-old arrives in San Diego on a deal guaranteed through June 2028, with club options through the 2029 season. Montréal will receive $350,000 in 2026 GAM and $150,000 in 2027 GAM, with the potential for an additional $125,000 based on performance incentives.
"We're happy to get this over the line and welcome Dagur to San Diego FC," Sporting Director Tyler Heaps said in the club's announcement. "He is an experienced player in this league and internationally with the quality to make an immediate impact. We believe he'll be an important player for our group, and we're excited to welcome him and his family to San Diego."
The move addresses an area of need for San Diego FC, which has battled injuries and inconsistency along the back line throughout the 2026 campaign. Thórhallsson brings valuable MLS experience after spending the last three-and-a-half seasons in the league, first with Orlando City before joining CF Montréal earlier this year.
With Montréal this season, the Icelandic defender made 10 appearances, including seven starts, and scored once before making the move west. During his time with Orlando City, he developed into a reliable two-way player, making 116 appearances across all competitions while contributing nine goals and 11 assists. His versatility has allowed him to play as both a fullback and wingback, fitting the modern, attack-minded profile San Diego has often looked for in wide defenders.
Before arriving in MLS, Thórhallsson came through the Haukar academy in Iceland and gained experience in Belgium, Norway, and his home country. He helped Breiðablik capture the 2022 Icelandic league title before earning his move to Orlando.
On the international stage, Thórhallsson has represented Iceland at every youth level and has earned 11 senior caps since making his debut in 2022. His experience with the national team adds another layer of maturity to a San Diego squad looking to regain momentum during the second half of the MLS season.
Thórhallsson arrives as a proven MLS contributor capable of stepping into the lineup immediately, providing competition across multiple defensive positions as the club looks to climb back into the Western Conference playoff race.
