San Diego FC has officially moved on from one of the biggest names in club history.
SDFC announced Friday that winger Hirving “Chucky” Lozano has been loaned to the LA Galaxy through the end of December 2026. As part of the agreement, the Galaxy will hold Lozano’s Designated Player slot for the duration of the loan and will have a permanent trade option at the conclusion of the loan. SDFC will continue paying the larger portion of his annual salary.
The move brings an end, at least temporarily, to Lozano’s time with San Diego FC after he helped lead the club through a historic inaugural season.
“We have been working with Hirving and his side to find the right opportunity for him to get him back on the field,” SDFC Sporting Director Tyler Heaps said. “We appreciate his contributions during our record-setting inaugural season and wish him well as he continues his career.”
Lozano's SDFC Career
Lozano joined San Diego FC ahead of the 2025 MLS season as the club's first-ever Designated Player, immediately becoming one of the biggest pieces of SDFC's inaugural roster.
The Mexican winger arrived from PSV Eindhoven with a résumé that included stops with Napoli and Pachuca, along with extensive experience with the Mexican national team.
He quickly became an important part of San Diego's attack.
Across all competitions, Lozano made 34 appearances for SDFC, scoring 11 goals and recording nine assists.
His biggest contribution came during San Diego's remarkable first season. SDFC finished at the top of the Western Conference before advancing to the Western Conference Final, putting together one of the most successful expansion seasons in MLS history.
Lozano was a major part of that run.
What It Means for SDFC
The loan gives both Lozano and San Diego an opportunity to move forward without completely closing the door on a permanent separation.
The Galaxy will take over Lozano's Designated Player slot for the remainder of the loan, while also holding the option to make the move permanent at its conclusion.
For SDFC, that creates additional flexibility as the club continues reshaping its roster during its second MLS season.
It also marks another significant change from the roster that helped San Diego make history in 2025.
Lozano was the face of the club's first Designated Player signing. Now, less than two years after arriving in San Diego, he will be wearing the colors of one of the club's biggest Western Conference rivals.
And with the permanent trade option included in the agreement, this could ultimately be more than just a temporary goodbye.
For now, though, Lozano's next chapter will take him up I-5 to Los Angeles.
