San Diego Wave Struggle to Find Rhythm in 1-0 Loss to Gotham FC

San Diego Wave FC traveled to Sports Illustrated Stadium on Friday night for their second meeting of the season with Gotham FC. The match was delayed 25 minutes due to weather before the two NWSL contenders finally took the field in New Jersey.

The matchup featured two of the league's top clubs entering the weekend. Gotham sat atop the NWSL standings, while San Diego occupied fourth place, giving the Wave another opportunity to measure themselves against one of the league's strongest teams. To leave with three points, San Diego needed to recreate the blueprint from its July 4 victory over Gotham, when the Wave controlled the midfield and dictated the tempo for much of the match.

Instead, Friday's contest developed into a physical, defensive battle. While both sides created moments throughout the opening half, Gotham gradually gained the edge in midfield and capitalized on its best opportunity before halftime. The Wave pushed for an equalizer after the break, but the hosts remained organized defensively to secure a 1-0 victory.

The result keeps Gotham at the top of the NWSL table, while the Wave remain in fourth as attention now turns to the final stretch of the regular season.

The First Half

Gotham came out on the front foot, pushing forward and controlling possession early. The Wave quickly found a way to disrupt that rhythm, as pressure from Mimi Van Zanten forced Esther Reiten into a poor pass and earned San Diego a goal kick.

The Wave worked the ball through midfield, with Lia Godfrey carrying it forward as both teams pushed numbers into the attack. Melanie Barcenas found Gia Corley, but Corley couldn’t connect as the two defenses continued to make life difficult for the opposing attack.

It quickly became a battle for the midfield. Gotham repeatedly closed down Van Zanten whenever she tried to move forward, while the Wave looked for openings through the visitors’ defensive line.

Barcenas nearly found one.

She spotted Trinity Byars making a run straight down the center of the field and launched the ball toward the forward. Byars was in position to connect, but Gotham goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger came charging off her line to beat her to the ball and shut down the chance.

The Wave kept knocking.

Van Zanten sent a cross into the box toward Laurina Fazer, who got a quick shot off. The effort had just enough lift to sail narrowly over the crossbar.

Gotham responded by immediately building an attack of its own. Reiten received a lofted ball from Jaedyn Shaw and tried to smash her effort into the back of the net, but the shot found the post instead.

Gotham recovered and worked the ball to Rose Lavelle, whose effort forced Sandra Paños into a save.

The Wave came right back.

Byars collected the ball from a Van Zanten throw-in, cut inside the box and slipped a pass across to Lia Godfrey. Godfrey got a shot away, but it drifted just outside the goal.

Neither side was willing to give an inch. The Wave and Gotham were both knocking on the door, and it felt like only a matter of time before one of them finally found a way through.

Unfortunately for San Diego, Gotham struck first.

Former Wave player Savannah McCaskill earned the first yellow card of the match after a late tackle on Kimmi Ascanio sent the midfielder to the ground. The Wave had begun to gain momentum, and Gotham looked to stop that surge before San Diego could turn its pressure into a goal.

McCaskill’s tackle forced a change for the Wave. Ascanio was unable to continue, making way for Kenza Dali. Dali had been resting due to a leg injury and entered the match wearing a large brace on her right leg.

Gotham then found its opening.

Jordynn Dudley played the ball to Jaedyn Shaw, who was running out on the left side of the box. Shaw took the opportunity and curled a shot toward the far side of the goal, beating Paños and giving Gotham the 1-0 lead.

The referee signaled for four minutes of added time, giving the Wave one final chance to find an equalizer before the break.

San Diego stormed forward, pushing for an answer, but four minutes wasn't enough. The Wave headed into halftime trailing Gotham 1-0 after a back-and-forth opening 45 minutes.

The Second Half

The Wave and Gotham continued searching for openings after the break, but both defenses looked even more settled than they had in the first half. The midfielders dropped deeper to reinforce their back lines, making it difficult for either side to build a dangerous attack.

Perle Morroni put in extra work on the left side, battling Rose Lavelle and Jordynn Dudley as Gotham tried to push forward.

Fifteen minutes into the half, neither team had managed to record a shot on target.

Gotham eventually found an opening on the counterattack. Dudley received the ball from Lavelle and tipped it forward to Sam Kerr, sending the Gotham attack racing toward goal. The Wave back line sprinted to keep pace, and as Kerr prepared to shoot, Kennedy Wesley slid across to block the attempt.

The Wave made its first change of the half shortly after, with Adriana Leon entering for Melanie Barcenas.

Gotham continued to control the midfield slightly better, but the visitors still struggled to turn that possession into a convincing attack. The Wave's defense continued to hold firm and limit Gotham's opportunities.

San Diego suffered another setback when Trinity Byars went down after stretching to reach a pass. The forward was able to walk off the field under her own power, but her night was over.

Jordan Fusco entered for Byars, while Tatum Wynalda and Nya Harrison also came on for Gia Corley and Morroni, respectively. The Wave suddenly had fresh legs and versatile options across the field, with the substitutions adding reinforcements both in attack and defense.

Wynalda made her presence felt immediately.

The midfielder carried the ball up the left side of the pitch before sending a dangerous ball into the box. Van Zanten was the intended target, but she couldn't arrive in time to meet the cross.

With only minutes remaining, the Wave finally began to turn up the pressure.

Kennedy Wesley carried the ball forward toward the box, battling Jaedyn Shaw along the way. Wesley won the duel and earned the Wave a corner, giving San Diego another chance to threaten the Gotham goal.

Kenza Dali stepped up to take the corner and delivered a promising ball into the box, but Gotham goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger rose above the crowd and snatched it out of the air.

That was the Wave's final real opportunity to change the result.

San Diego never found the equalizer. After a first half filled with back-and-forth chances, the Wave struggled to control the midfield after the break and ultimately couldn't find a way through Gotham's defense.

The final whistle confirmed a 1-0 Gotham victory, with Jaedyn Shaw's first-half goal proving to be the difference.
