San Diego Wave FC returned home tonight to face the Orlando Pride in their final home match before the international break. The Pride entered the match looking to recover from back to back losses, while the Wave hoped to continue their strong run of form in front of the Snapdragon Stadium crowd.

Head Coach Jonas Eidevall made two changes to the lineup from the previous match. Gia Corley started on the right wing in place of Melanie Barcenas, while Kiki Pickett filled in at left back with Perle Morroni suspended.

The First Half

San Diego immediately put pressure on Orlando’s defense. Just two minutes into the match, Ludmila tested goalkeeper Anna Moorhouse with an early shot as the Wave pushed forward aggressively.

One of the biggest storylines of the night quickly became the battle between Kennedy Wesley and Barbra Banda. Wesley stayed tight to the Orlando striker throughout the match, disrupting attacking runs and preventing Banda from finding much space in dangerous areas.

The game became physical almost immediately. Players from both teams repeatedly fell to the ground after hard challenges, and the referee was forced to manage rising frustration on both sides. Mimi Van Zanten took a heavy collision early in the half, while Dudinha and Wesley were also on the receiving end of difficult fouls.

San Diego’s attack focused heavily on the right side during the opening half. Van Zanten, Kenza Dali, Gia Corley, and Ludmila frequently overloaded that flank, pulling Orlando defenders toward the ball and leaving space for Dudinha to operate on the opposite side.

The Wave created several dangerous opportunities but struggled to find the final touch. Corley delivered an excellent cross into the box for Lia Godfrey, while Ludmila repeatedly attacked down the wing looking for Dudinha arriving late into the area.

Both defenses remained organized despite the attacking pressure. Orlando committed several tactical fouls as San Diego tried to break into transition moments, earning yellow cards for Oihane Hernández and Hailie Mace. Kristen McNabb was also booked after a physical challenge of her own.

Late in the half, the match opened up dramatically. Banda forced two desperate defensive stops, including a crucial block from Wesley and a save from DiDi Haracic. At the other end, the Wave nearly broke through during stoppage time when Dudinha and Van Zanten each forced saves from Moorhouse.

Instead, Orlando found the breakthrough moments later.

In first half stoppage time, Luana Bertolucci launched a long ball forward that sparked a counterattack for the Pride. Nicole Payne timed her run well, broke into space, and finished past Haracic to give Orlando a 1-0 lead against the run of play.

The half ended with the Wave holding nearly 60 percent possession, but the teams were level in shots with eight each. San Diego had controlled long stretches of the game, yet Orlando carried the lead into the locker room.

The Second Half

It became clear immediately after halftime that Lia Godfrey was determined to find an equalizer.

Within the opening minute of the second half, Godfrey drove directly into the box and fired a shot just wide of goal. Minutes later, she again pushed high into the attack as Ludmila attempted to thread a pass through Orlando’s defensive line.

San Diego also shifted its attacking shape. Rather than focusing almost entirely on the right side, Dudinha and Ludmila began combining more frequently down the left wing to stretch Orlando’s compact defense.

The Pride nearly doubled their lead in the 56th minute when Banda broke free on the counterattack, but Haracic made an important save to keep the Wave within one goal.

Jonas Eidevall responded quickly with attacking substitutions. In the 58th minute, Tatum Wynalda replaced Kiki Pickett and Gabi Portilho came on for Gia Corley as San Diego searched for more creativity and energy in the final third.

Moments later, Godfrey won a dangerous free kick after being fouled by multiple Orlando defenders. She delivered the service herself, finding Kennedy Wesley in the box, but the ball was deflected for a corner.

Eidevall continued pushing for an equalizer midway through the half. Trinity Byars replaced Ludmila, while Laurina Fazer came on for Godfrey. Byars entered the match having scored in each of the previous two games, and the Wave hoped her finishing touch could rescue a point.

Despite controlling possession, San Diego struggled to create clean attacking lanes against Orlando’s aggressive defensive pressure. The Pride closed down Wave players immediately after every reception, forcing San Diego into longer aerial passes and more difficult buildup patterns.

Even so, the chances continued to come late.

Kennedy Wesley once again shut down a dangerous Banda counterattack, recovering quickly and preventing the striker from breaking through alone on goal.

Melanie Barcenas entered for Kenza Dali in the final stages, giving the Wave four attacking players pushing high up the field. The energy inside Snapdragon Stadium rose as San Diego pressed harder and harder for an equalizer.

A dangerous cross from McNabb found Gabi Portilho for a perfectly placed header that forced another excellent save from Moorhouse. Soon after, Barcenas made a brilliant run into the box and earned a free kick just outside the area. She took the set piece herself and again forced Moorhouse into action.

The Wave threw everything forward during seven minutes of stoppage time. Byars and Fazer each forced desperate late saves as Orlando defended deep inside their own penalty area.

San Diego finished the match with 17 shots, five on target, and 58 percent possession, but could not find the breakthrough goal.

Tonight belonged to Orlando’s defense and goalkeeper Anna Moorhouse, whose late saves preserved the Pride’s 1-0 victory.

Next up, the Wave travel to Illinois to face the Chicago Stars FC on May 31 in their final match before the international break.
