SDFC Defeat FC Dallas in a Clinical Performance at Home

San Diego FC returned to Snapdragon Stadium for the first time since the World Cup break on Saturday night, hosting fifth-place FC Dallas. Looking to bounce back from a disappointing midweek defeat, Mikey Varas' side hoped to get back on track in front of the home faithful.

SDFC's newest signing and third designated player, Elias Achouri was unveiled to the crowd before the match.

Lineup

Varas switched a few things up when it came to the starting XI. Alejandro Alvarado started in the right mid position instead of Anibal Godoy. Alvarado has been slowly making his return to full form and proved himself enough to earn a starting spot.

In a twist of events, Luca Bombino started the match on the bench. Bombino, who served his one-match ban for receiving a red card in the match against Vancouver, was slated to be back in his usual starting left-back role but was replaced by Kieran Sargeant.

First Half

The home side entered the match with a clear objective in keeping possession, looking for open runs in behind, and counterattacking. The first 15 minutes saw SDFC dominate possession 77-23%, which also resulted in two shots on target. One of those shots was blocked by the head of the FC Dallas goalkeeper Daniel that resulted in an injury. Daniel was replaced by Jonathan Sirois.

Dallas was extremely comfortable sitting back in a low-block and defending. Once again, SDFC found it hard to be creative up front and could not produce a goal out of 74% possession and five shots on target.

Anders Dreyer was productive while widening the field and playing in from the outside. Marcus Ingvartsen and Jeppe Tverskov tried to find him on multiple passes into the final third but unfortunately nothing came out of them. The game was setting up to be another clear example of the opponent playing patient, hard to break down defense.

Second Half

Alejandro Alvarado wasted no time making an impact after the halftime break. The young midfielder showed composure outside the left side of the penalty area, creating just enough space before curling a brilliant strike into the far-right corner of the net.

After celebrating with his teammates, Alvarado sprinted to the sideline to embrace head coach Mikey Varas—a heartfelt gesture of gratitude for the faith Varas has continued to show in him. It was a special moment for the homegrown midfielder, who has worked tirelessly to return from the ACL injury that cut short his 2025 season. For Alvarado, this goal was more than just a place on the scoresheet—it was another milestone in an inspiring comeback.

Valakari came close to scoring again when he hit his right-footed shot off the post in the 59th minute. After an hour, SDFC were on the gas pedal, leading in almost every stat category.

Varas put transfer rumors to bed when he subbed on David Vazquez in the 73rd minute. Vazquez has been recently linked with a move to Club America and fans were wondering if he wasn't getting playing minutes due to those rumors. Anibal Godoy also came on for Alvarado in hopes of using his veteran status to put the game to bed and protect a delicate, 1-0 lead.

The match ended in a 1-0 SDFC win. Desperate for three points, the home side finally got back on the right track.

Final Thoughts

Tonight's match showed what SDFC can do when they stick to their game plan and get a result out of it. The team played with high possession numbers and a solid defense, which made it extremely difficult to break through for FC Dallas.

Still, SDFC almost gave it away in the dying minutes again when Logan Farrington found a pass that sent him into the penalty area only for Manu Duah to make a crucial, game-saving tackle.

A narrow, 1-0 win, could have been very different if things went right for Dallas. SDFC continues to be hesitant in the final third. Their heavy-possession style allows defenders to set up in a low block, which makes it difficult to penetrate. Players like Valakari and Alex Mighten struggle with consistency in front of the box – likely a confidence issue.

Overall, the team did enough to secure three crucial points in a tight playoff race. They'll look to build momentum off of this gritty performance at home when they take on Minnesota United away on August 1st.
