San Diego Wave Battle Through Rain to Upset Washington Spirit

San Diego Wave FC traveled across the country to Washington, D.C., on Sunday afternoon for another meeting with the Washington Spirit. Heavy rain poured down at Audi Field from the opening whistle, creating difficult conditions for both teams and adding another layer of unpredictability to an already competitive matchup.

The Wave entered the match looking to turn around their recent momentum and repeat their earlier success against Washington. The Spirit, meanwhile, had the advantage of playing in front of their home crowd and were determined to turn the result around on their own field.

Despite the rain making the ball difficult to control, San Diego came out aggressively and looked to put Washington under pressure early. The Wave found opportunities in the final third while their defense worked to keep Trinity Rodman and the Spirit's attack from finding space.

What followed was a physical, rain-soaked battle that tested both teams' ability to stay composed. San Diego ultimately needed contributions at both ends of the field, and a strong performance from Sandra Paños, to leave the nation's capital with all three points.

The First Half

Buckets of rain dumped onto the field as the opening whistle blew, adding another layer of chaos to an already tense matchup. The ball skidded unpredictably across the wet grass and slipped off boots, forcing both teams to adjust to the conditions. The opening minutes were cautious as the Wave and Spirit found their footing.

San Diego created the first opportunities. Ludmila fired from distance to earn a corner, and Lia Godfrey sent a well-aimed delivery into the box toward the attackers waiting inside. The opportunity came to nothing, but the Wave continued to press Washington deep into its own half.

Ludmila and Melanie Barcenas soon forced two saves from Spirit goalkeeper Sandy MacIver. Ludmila unleashed a rocket toward the center of the goal before the ball was recycled to Barcenas. The midfielder curled her follow-up toward the top-left corner, but MacIver managed to get enough of a hand to the shot to keep it out despite the rain.

Washington eventually found a way to settle into possession, but the Spirit were largely forced to build through the right side. Trinity Rodman struggled to find space as Kennedy Wesley and Mimi Van Zanten worked together to close down the dangerous forward.

As possession evened out, San Diego continued to look more dangerous in the final third. The Wave finished the opening 45 minutes with five shots, two of which were on target, while Washington managed just two shots. San Diego's pressure disrupted the Spirit's passing and prevented Washington from consistently getting into dangerous areas around the box.

Four minutes of added time were signaled, and the Spirit suddenly turned up the pressure. In quick succession, Sofia Cantore and Rebeca Bernal tested Sandra Paños, but the experienced goalkeeper stood tall, making two excellent saves to preserve the scoreline.

The whistle finally sounded on a chaotic, rain-soaked first half with the score still level. Both teams headed into the locker rooms looking to dry off, regroup and find a way through in the second half.

The Second Half

The rain continued to pour as the referee signaled the start of the second half, but the teams looked far more comfortable with the conditions. The tentative opening from the first 45 minutes was gone, and the Wave immediately looked more willing to attack.

Ludmila forced an early save from MacIver just moments after the restart. Kimmi Ascanio, Lia Godfrey and Gia Corley then combined to nearly create another opportunity, with a dangerous team move ending in a promising cross flashing across the face of goal.

It was clear that head coach Jonas Eidevall wanted his team to be more decisive in front of goal. Godfrey, Ludmila, Corley and Barcenas all took their chances, firing toward goal rather than waiting for another pass to open up.

But Trinity Rodman reminded the Wave that Washington remained dangerous on the counter. The forward sprinted through the center of the field and found enough space to fire toward goal, but the pressure from San Diego's center-back pairing forced the attempt wide.

Eidevall soon turned to his bench, bringing on Trinity Byars for Ludmila.

The substitution paid off almost immediately.

Byars made her presence felt with a clever touch that poked the ball forward into the box and into the path of Godfrey. The midfielder lifted her finish over MacIver and into the net, giving the Wave a 1-0 lead.

Washington had no choice but to push forward after falling behind, and the Spirit's desperation quickly became evident. Ascanio took a hard challenge from Rebeca Bernal that left the 18-year-old on the ground. Thankfully, Ascanio was able to walk off under her own power before being replaced by Kenza Dali.

Rodman continued searching for a way through on the counter, but Van Zanten repeatedly matched her pace and disrupted her runs. Behind her, the rest of San Diego's defensive line held firm, forming an increasingly difficult wall for Washington to break through.

Eidevall made two more attacking changes, bringing on Tatum Wynalda and Adriana Leon for Barcenas and Godfrey. The fresh legs suggested the Wave were not content to simply sit on their one-goal advantage—they wanted to find another.

As San Diego's substitutions came on, Paños went down inside her goal and received treatment. The goalkeeper remained in the match, despite appearing to be less than 100%, leaving the Wave with just one remaining substitution for the final 10 minutes.

Washington began throwing numbers forward in search of an equalizer. San Diego absorbed the pressure and, importantly, remained composed whenever possession was regained. The Spirit sent crosses and attacks into the box, but Paños continued to command her area, blocking shots and collecting crosses before they could turn into dangerous chances.

The final moments brought another scare. A tactical foul from Dali earned her a yellow card and gave Washington a free kick in a dangerous position. The set piece eventually resulted in a corner, sending nearly every available Spirit player into the box.

San Diego needed one final defensive stand.

A clearance from Kristen McNabb ended the threat, and with it, the match.

The San Diego Wave had done it again.

For the second time this season, the Wave defeated the Washington Spirit, this time surviving a torrential downpour and a frantic final stretch to leave the field with a 1-0 victory.
