The United States Men's National Team begins its 2026 FIFA World Cup journey on Friday night when it faces Paraguay at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles.

With Mauricio Pochettino leading the Americans into their first World Cup on home soil since 1994, the pressure and excitement surrounding this group are immense. The U.S. enters the tournament with high expectations and a talented roster capable of competing with anyone in the group stage.

These two nations met in a friendly last November, a match the United States won after controlling much of the play. While the result was positive, many remember the heated confrontation that broke out after the final whistle.

Paraguay brought a physical edge to that match and will likely do the same on Friday. They are a team that thrives on turning games into battles, contesting every second ball and disrupting their opponent's rhythm whenever possible.

Tactically, the United States has developed a much more fluid identity under Pochettino.

Defensively, the Americans often line up in a compact 4-5-1 shape, but once possession is won, the formation transforms. Left back Antonee Robinson is given the freedom to push high up the field, while Alex Freeman frequently tucks inside from the right side to create an additional center back during buildup. The result is often a 3-2-4-1 shape that allows the U.S. to overload midfield areas and get creative players such as Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie, Gio Reyna, and Malik Tillman into dangerous pockets of space between the lines.

One of the biggest tactical battles will be whether Paraguay can slow down that movement.

Paraguay typically operates in a disciplined 4-2-3-1 and is comfortable defending in a low block for long stretches. Rather than pressing aggressively, they often sit deep, stay compact, and look to counterattack through wide areas. That approach could create opportunities behind Robinson when he pushes forward, making defensive transitions a key area of focus for the Americans.

For the U.S., breaking down Paraguay's defensive shape will require patience and quick ball movement. The Americans should control possession, but possession alone won't be enough. They'll need creativity in the final third and intelligent movement from their attacking players to create openings against a packed defense. Folarin Balogun's movement inside the penalty area, combined with the playmaking ability of Pulisic and Reyna, could prove crucial in unlocking Paraguay's back line.

The biggest question entering the match is execution.

Paraguay will test the United States physically and mentally from the opening whistle. If Pochettino's side can dictate possession, avoid defensive mistakes in transition, and match Paraguay's intensity in the duels, the Americans will be well-positioned to start their World Cup campaign with three points and build momentum for the rest of Group D.
