Philadelphia Hands SDFC Its Worst Defeat in Club History

Sounds of trumpets and guitars filled the air at Snapdragon Stadium before kickoff as San Diego celebrated Mexican heritage night. San Diego FC hosted Philadelphia Union on Sunday night in a match where playoff stakes were high.

SDFC came into the match with a 9-8-6 record, sitting in 9th place. Philadelphia Union held the same record, and the same place in the East.

Head coach Mikey Varas went with a strong defensive lineup. Kieran Sargeant and Oscar Verhoeven held down the wingback positions while Manu Duah and Ian Murphy started in the middle. The midfield had a few changes as well - Gabe Pirani made the injured list and wasn't available for this match, Onni Valakari took his spot on the left. Alejandro Alvardo took over duties on the right for Anibal Godoy.

Amahl Pellegrino was called upon to start in the center striker position as new-signing, Cedric Bakambu started on the bench. Duran Ferree started in goal after CJ Dos Santos was sent off following a red card in the previous match.

The Union also featured a familiar face for San Diego fans, as Escondido native Milan Iloski returned to his hometown. Iloski currently leads Philadelphia with 12 goals this season. Another player drawing attention was teenager Cavan Sullivan, who is enjoying a breakout campaign and leads the Union with eight assists.

First Half

The match started out with intensity by both teams.

SDFC were able to do what they intended on doing and control the pace of the game by keeping possession. After 20 minutes, SDFC led possession 70-30 and had 3 attempts on goal, one of which sailed just over the top bar when Valakari misplaced a shot from about 15 feet.

Both teams pressed high which led to chances created. Iloski came close to scoring on his former team in the 17th minute when a cross nearly found his lunging foot right in front of the net.

The end of the half turned physical when Iloski went down and Alvarado kicked the ball at his face. The referee first showed Alvarado a red card but after a VAR review, the infraction was lowered to a yellow.

In the 5th minute of stoppage time, Philadelphia's midfielder, Indiana Vassiliev found space on the left and sent in a low cross that Sullivan backheel flicked and watched slowly roll into the corner of the net. The exquisite finish by the youngster is a clear example of why the Union youth product is on his way to stardom. After 6 minutes of stoppage time, the first half came to an end.

Once again, SDFC struggled to turn its possession into goals. With both teams creating a few near chances, the match increasingly felt like it would come down to which side could make the most of its opportunities.

Second Half

The second half started off with a scare for SDFC. In the 50th minute, Iloski found space on the right with only Sargeant in his way. He made a couple of cuts and unleashed a shot that bounced off the crossbar. Philadelphia's top striker was having an off-night as he just couldn't seem to get the finish.

San Diego was doing a great job at keeping possession in the final third. The movement on the ball and off the ball was great. Philadelphia was simply playing gritty, tough defense, making it tough for SDFC to get through for a final shot on goal.

In the 62nd minute, the Vassiliev-Sullivan combination struck again. Sullivan got wide on the left and hit a hard, low shot that went through the legs of SDFC goalkeeper Ferree.

Five minutes later, Philadelphia found another goal. An attack started by Sullivan resulted in Francis Westfield sending a low cross into the path of Bruno Damiani, who finished calmly into the opposite corner to make the score 3-0.

It was time to try something else for Varas. First, David Vazquez and Cedric Bakambu came on to provide fresh legs up front. Then, Bryan Zamble came on and made an immediate impact. The youngster injected energy and speed into the attack.

Unfortunately for San Diego, the Union made it 4-0 in the 86th minute. A Philadelphia corner kick resulted in Godoy accidentally heading in an own goal.

The scoring wouldn't end there. Cavan Sullivan's brother, Quinn Sullivan, a second half substitute, provided an assist by sending in a low cross that was tapped in by Malik Jakupovic for the youngster's first ever MLS goal.

The final whistle brought an emphatic 5-0 defeat for San Diego FC, marking a difficult night at Snapdragon Stadium and the worst ever defeat at home. SDFC controlled possession for long stretches and showed some promising movement in the final third, but once again struggled to turn that control into meaningful scoring opportunities. Philadelphia, meanwhile, made the most of its chances and punished San Diego in transition.

"This is an unacceptable situation, unacceptable result. I take full responsibility, it's my job to get this group ready to play, for whatever reason, this group has not found any sort of consistency. What I can promise is we are going to go back to the drawing board. We're going to make the environment even more competitive because these guys got to fight for their lives if they want to be here and they have to show a lot more than what they've shown so far," said Varas after the match.

With the playoff race tightening, SDFC cannot afford to dwell on the loss. The team will need to regroup quickly, find more consistency in front of goal and respond in its next match.
