San Diego Wave traveled to Texas to face the Houston Dash tonight, on their second game of three in eight days.
The Wave looked to defend their lead in the NWSL standings, and the Dash were desperate to end their five game winless streak.
Head Coach Jonas Eidevall made two changes in his lineup since the last game, giving Melanie Barcenas her first start of the season. Lia Godfrey returned to the starting XI; Gia Corley and Gabi Portilho earned their rest.

The First Half
San Diego started the match with intent, using quick movement and direct passing to attack Houston's high defensive line. Lia Godfrey repeatedly unleashed Ludmila and Dudinha with perfectly weighted through balls from midfield. The speed of Dudinha and Ludmila allowed the Wave to constantly get in behind the Dash defense and create dangerous 1-v-1 opportunities against Jane Campbell.
Melanie Barcenas nearly opened the scoring after collecting a loose ball in midfield. With one quick touch, she sent a shot toward goal that appeared destined for the net before a last-second clearance from a Houston center back kept the game level.

The breakthrough finally came through a moment of brilliance from Dudinha. Godfrey delivered a perfectly timed assist into space, and Dudinha responded with an incredible floating finish from the left side of the box that curled into the far side of the goal. It was another reminder of the chemistry developing between the Brazilian attacker and the Wave midfield.
Houston struggled to create consistent pressure in the opening half and managed just one shot on target. Still, the Dash nearly found a late equalizer before halftime after collecting a loose ball and sending Kat Rader into the box. Kristen McNabb and Kennedy Wesley were stretched defensively, and Kat Rader's pressure forced Perle Morroni to poke the ball out for a corner to prevent a dangerous chance.
The Second Half
The Wave carried their momentum into the second half, immediately putting pressure on Houston's defense. Aggressive forward runs from Godfrey opened up space for Dudinha and Kenza Dali to attack centrally, while the movement of Ludmila and Barcenas kept the Dash back line stretched.
An early chance came from a long diagonal ball by Kennedy Wesley to Ludmila. After Ludmila found Barcenas on the right flank, the Wave patiently worked the ball across the field through Godfrey and into the path of a wide-open Dudinha. The sequence highlighted how fluid and connected San Diego's attack looked for much of the night.
With Dudinha, Ludmila, Godfrey, Dali, and Barcenas all threatening in different ways, Houston struggled to contain the variety of attacking options. The Wave consistently found pockets of space and forced the Dash defense to shift side to side.
Jonas Eidevall turned to his bench midway through the half, bringing on Kiki Pickett, Gia Corley, and Trinity Byars for Mimi Van Zanten, Barcenas, and Ludmila. The substitutions provided fresh legs across the field as San Diego managed its squad during a demanding stretch of three matches in eight days.
Just under half an hour from full time, Kimmi Ascanio nearly doubled the lead. Corley forced Jane Campbell into two outstanding saves in quick succession, first with a powerful strike from distance and then on the rebound after Campbell managed to recover.

Despite the Wave's momentum, Houston found a way back into the match through a quick counterattack. Faase broke forward and finished past Didi Haracic at the near post to level the score against the run of play.
With the match tied, Eidevall introduced Gabi Portilho in place of Godfrey to inject fresh energy into the attack.
One of the biggest moments of the night came with around fifteen minutes remaining. Trinity Byars lost her footing while challenging for the ball and collided with Campbell as the goalkeeper collected it on the ground. Red blood poured from Campbell's forehead, and a red card was shown immediately to Byars.
Houston's medical staff quickly surrounded Campbell while she received treatment on the field. Thankfully, the goalkeeper eventually stood up smiling, wearing a large black bandage around her head. Hopefully her injury is not serious and her recovery is quick.
After a VAR review, the referee reversed the red card, ruling the collision accidental and determining that Byars had made a legitimate attempt to play the ball. The decision was met with frustration from the home crowd.
Backup goalkeeper Caroline Delisle entered for Campbell while Houston completed concussion protocols.

Not long after, Houston capitalized on one of their few dangerous attacking moments of the half. Kat Rader found space between the Wave's stretched back line and buried an excellent finish past Haracic to give the Dash a late lead.
Eidevall responded by bringing on Tatum Wynalda for Dudinha as San Diego pushed desperately for an equalizer.
Only minutes after entering, Wynalda helped spark the sequence that led to the tying goal. A pass up the right flank found Morroni, whose cross into the box forced Delisle into a save after Corley got a touch on the ball. Byars reacted first to the rebound and calmly finished to pull the Wave level.

The Wave now shift their focus to a home matchup against the on Sunday, May 24.
